Richard F. Tomlinson, II joined the Chicago office of the architecture, engineering, planning and interior design practice Skidmore Owings & Merrill, LLP as an entry level design architect in 1972. He practiced and served clients locally and globally as a Managing Partner from 1987 through 2014. SOM has received more awards from the American Institute of Architects than any other in the world and was named one of the most innovative design practices in Fast Company’s annual World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies issue. During his tenure in the firm, Tomlinson orchestrated design assignments for real estate projects of various scales, complexities and typologies for private, public, institutional and commercial clients. These projects ranged from large scale complex urban developments, super tall mixed use buildings to strategic plans and corporate interiors. For him, every assignment was an opportunity for design innovation to add value for the benefit of his client designing  a process unique to the situation. Always, however, the process was one of collaborative exploration between teams of architects, planners, interior designers, engineers, artists, scientists, universities and private laboratories, and contractors and other “makers” forming new solutions for his clients that sought a holistic integration of all design disciplines to achieve outcomes of high performance, efficiency, simplicity, economy and a quality of craft.

Educated as an architect and architectural engineer, Tomlinson received a Masters of Architecture degree from the a University of Illinois and a Bachelors of Architectural Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University. Throughout his career, he has dedicated his time and resources to various social, civic, professional and philanthropic endeavors. Currently, he is a Research Sponsor and Member of the Wharton Real Estate Center in the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, a Board and Executive Committee member of the Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, a Presidents Circle member of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and a Council Member of the Urban Land Institute.
